Three Cricket Formats and Popular Competitions

From T20 to Test — each format is different, and so is the betting approach.

bd T20 and ODI Cricket Match Betting Formats

T20, ODI and Test — what is the difference?

T20 cricket is the fastest format — a match ends in just 20 overs. Big hits, quick wickets and dramatic changes on every ball make T20 engaging for betting. In Bangladesh, the BPL tournament is played in T20 format and is especially popular among Bangladeshi fans.

An ODI match has 50 overs and two innings. Strategy plays a bigger role here — the powerplay, middle overs and death overs each have a different character, which adds variety to betting markets. bd offers betting on international ODI series including the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Test cricket is a five-day game. There are three possible results — team A wins, team B wins, or a draw. In this format, weather, pitch conditions and bowling lineups have a significant effect on odds.

Although IPL is India's T20 league, it has a large following among Bangladeshi fans, and bd has active betting markets for its matches. Matches featuring the Bangladesh Tigers in the T20 World Cup and other ICC tournaments always attract special attention.

Football and other sports

Alongside cricket, bd also offers betting on football, badminton, kabaddi and more. In football, the possibility of a draw means the market has three options — team A win, team B win, draw — which is different from T20 and ODI cricket. For a detailed look at markets and odds across different sports, see the sports betting guide.

Popular Betting Markets and a brief introduction to each

Understanding which market to bet on is the first step in cricket betting.

  • Match Winner The simplest market — pick which team will win the match. Only two outcomes in T20 and ODI, three in Test. Example: in a T20 between team A and team B, if you pick team B and they win, your bet wins.
  • Toss Winner This market is settled before the match starts. Pick which team will win the toss. Odds for both teams are usually equal here.
  • Top Batsman Bet on which batter will score the most runs — for their team or in the whole match. With multiple options, odds in this market can be higher.
  • Total Runs Over/Under Pick whether total runs in the match (or a specific innings) will be above (over) or below (under) a set number. Example: will total runs be more than 160.5?
  • First Wicket to Fall Which over will the first wicket fall in — this market requires attention to how the powerplay unfolds.
  • Multi Bet Multiple bets on a single ticket. All selections must win for the multi bet to pay out — if any one loses, the whole bet is lost. Example: combining three selections from three different matches multiplies the odds, so the potential return is higher.
  • Handicap Betting A run deficit is given to the stronger team to level the market. If team A is expected to beat team B easily, team A is given a virtual deficit in handicap betting — this brings the odds for both sides closer together.

How to read odds and understand the maths

Decimal, fractional and American — all three formats are available on bd.

Odds Format How it looks How to read it
Decimal 2.50 Stake × odds = total return (including profit).
Fractional 3/2 The numerator is the profit against the denominator as the stake. ৳3 profit on a ৳2 stake.
American +150 or -125 + sign: profit on a 100 stake. − sign: how much you need to stake to make 100 profit.

Example 1 — same price in three formats

Team A to win, stake ৳500. Decimal odds 2.50 = Fractional 3/2 = American +150. If the bet wins, total return is ৳1,250 (৳750 profit + ৳500 stake back). If the bet loses, ৳500 is gone.

Example 2 — favourite's price

Team B to win (favourite): Decimal 1.80 = Fractional 4/5 = American -125. In American format, a minus sign shows how much you need to stake to make 100 profit. On a ৳500 stake, return is ৳900 (৳400 profit).

bd Live In-Play Betting Wicket and Over Updates

Live In-Play Betting — a new opportunity on every wicket

You can place bets on bd even after a match has started — this is called in-play or live betting. Odds shift quickly after every wicket, six and dot ball. Say team A gets off to a good start with 50 runs in 5 overs — their odds to win will shorten and team B's odds will lengthen.

Following the broadcast during live betting is important. Once the powerplay ends, if batters slow down in the middle overs, the under market may become more attractive. On the other hand, if big hitters are due in the last 2 overs, the over market becomes active.

When a wicket falls, a new batter comes in — this change has an immediate effect on the market. In-play requires quick decisions because odds can lock in an instant. Remember, betting is for entertainment — stay aware of the responsible gaming policy.

Some useful habits in cricket betting

Betting is a form of entertainment. A few simple habits can make the experience better.

Set a budget beforehand Decide your budget before each match and stick to it. Betting is for enjoyment, not stress.
Focus on one market Start with simple markets like match winner or total runs. Move to more complex markets as you gain experience.
Compare odds Understand the odds across different markets for the same match. Decimal format is the easiest to calculate with.
Keep a clear head in live betting Odds change fast in in-play betting. Follow your own plan rather than rushing.
Do not increase your stake after a loss Placing a bigger bet to recover a loss is not a good decision. Treat each match as a fresh start.

Understanding the multi bet calculation

See how a multi bet is worked out with an example.

Three selections, one stake

Say you pick three teams across three separate matches. The decimal odds for the first selection are 1.50, the second 1.60 and the third 1.70. In a multi bet, these odds are multiplied: 1.50 × 1.60 × 1.70 = 4.08 (approximately). On a ৳100 stake, if all selections are correct, the return is ৳408.

But keep in mind — if even one of the three selections loses, the entire ৳100 is gone. Multi bets offer higher returns but also carry higher risk. Keeping stakes small is the sensible approach.

Cricket Betting FAQ

The most frequently asked questions about cricket betting on bd.

Which format is "best" depends on what you know. T20 matches end quickly and results come fast. ODI gives more room for strategy. Test has three outcomes — win, loss, draw — so the odds work differently. Beginners usually find it easier to start with T20.

Yes, bd has betting markets for major tournaments including BPL, IPL and the T20 World Cup. You can place bets both before a match starts and while it is in progress.

Decimal odds of 2.50 means you multiply your stake by 2.50 to get your total return. Example: ৳500 stake × 2.50 = ৳1,250 return (৳750 profit + ৳500 stake back). The higher the odds, the less likely that outcome is considered to be.

In live in-play betting, odds change after every ball, wicket and run. The market updates with each event. However, if play is suspended for any reason or certain markets are closed, betting may pause temporarily.

In a multi bet, every selection must be correct. If even one loses, the entire bet is lost — even if all other selections were correct. Example: if two out of three selections are correct, the full ৳100 is still lost. That is why it is better to keep stakes small on multi bets.
